Bandicoot is an animal and omnivores that mostly live in their mother bag and they are mostly found in Australia. Their name derives from “pandikokku” that is spoken the language in part of southern area nowadays they are most describes in an Australian animal. It is a group of 20 species from small to medium rodents.
But in reality, they are marsupials but not as big as marsupials smaller than from. Their size between 6 to 20 inches in length do not grow too much. they live in the coastal area of Australia. Bandicoot lives in different climate they form nests and live in holes. among 20 species of bandicoot, 3 are most common like long-nosed bandicoots, southern brown bandicoots, and northern brown bandicoot.
They have short fur that is different in colors like grey, orange-brown and many others that distinguish bandicoot from other similar species. They move like kangaroos and has different small tiny hairs their top speed is 24 km per hour and their weight is 0.2 to 1.6 kg approximately. Bandicoot lifespan is 3 to 7 years. They look like the rat and mostly resemble with rabbits.
They eat both types of foods either plant-based or animal but they mostly prefer insects, earthworm, and roots vegetables They’re one of Australia’s most interesting creatures, but unfortunately they’re also one of our most endangered species. They generally live in grasslands, like the ones seen around me here but unfortunately, about 99% of their grassland homes have been developed for housing or agriculture,
so they don’t have anywhere to live. Couple this with problems from cats, and in particular, foxes, and the Bandicoot is on the brink of extinction. Bandicoots have an extremely short pregnancy. In fact, it’s one of the shortest of any known mammal. They’re pregnant for only 12.5 days. The female bandicoot gives birth to a young one after a 12 day of the gestation period. All of the 300 or so animals here on mainland Australia are descendants of animals bred at Melbourne Zoo.
We breed to release them back to the wild in safe locations, away from animals like foxes. All of the Werribee Open Range Zoo is being predator proofed with brand-new fences. This means that we’ll be able to breed the Bandicoots and also release them onto the grounds, so people can come and see our Bandicoots, and will also have plenty of animals to release back to the wild when the wild is ready for them.
If we want to protect grassland species, we can all help by planting local grasses in our backyards and in our parks. Bandicoot is endangered species of Australia and it is illegal to trap them and kill them.they have a very short lifespan when they reach at the 4 months they never are able to survive in a world and automatically with the passage of time they died. Today sad to know that seven species are endangered out of twenty.
Breeding life cycle and living with Bandicoots:
- They generally live 2 to 4 years in a world.
- They live alone in a specific location or with a specific person.
- Female has a very small area and colony to live as compared to man. Man lives in a very large and vast area and fights with others for rights.
- Male bandicoot stands at their back legs and attack on shoulders and neck on other ones.
- Bandicoot breeds more than a time in a year a female gives birth 4 to 5 child at one time but has only 1 or 2 for survival.after birth child go in a mother pouch where it is feed on mother milk and get favorable environment.
- Their pouches open at the backside and mother take care to prevent dirt from entering in the child bag.
Living with bandicoot: In NSW bandicoot are protected and its considered as illegal to trap them and kill them without having licenses. means a license must be necessary for this purpose. The reason of this bandicoot is located in the specific place they can move at night when they want otherwise not.when they move towards others home they come back at a night and others bandicoot at their own houses.

Keep one thing in mind the living area of these animals must be far away from home. Where they never are proved harmful to human beings. They mostly live in home gardens where they form small holes in the earth and live in this and also clean the garden from pests and other dangerous insects.
Bandicoot eats earthworms, insect larvae, and spiders as well as tubers
they attract mostly in that gardens where water storage high and insect ratio in high amount as compare to lives in bushes. gardens area have a large number of bandicoots as seen to others. Today’s bandicoot’s ratio very low in gardens due to lack of their foods because in gardens chemical sprays are used to kill insects and other harmful insects so they are encouraging in gardens due to this factors. Household. Bandicoots are very different from lives in bushes they are smaller in size no larger than 20mm and there buried in mud they have very shiny and attractive look from those who live in bushes.
Bandicoot sound and adaptation like: Bandicoot produces 4 types of sound and Unique adaptations:
- A high pitch voice uses to check the location of one another.
- when they are in pain and feel fear, they make loud voice “Shriek”
- when they are feeling threaten or alarming they produce special voice “Chuff Chuff”
- when they feel irritating they make “Whuff Whuff”
They have many adaptations according to environmental condition either is soft or hard etc.
- Nectoral Behavior: from hot Australian sun keep them away.
- Rear-facing pouch opening: when the female is digging keep them protect from entering dirt in her pouch
- Strong digging claws: Underground prey digging out
- Long pointed teeth: have the capacity to crush any food items that are necessary for their diet.

It lives in crops of India and Sri Lanka basically it is the rat but not from the family of rattus. When any fear or threat came to their fur look darker it is a rat but is not in the genus Rattus they may be a pass to cereal crops and gardens in India and Sri Lanka. This type of rats mostly lives in an empty house their tail is shorter than body length. when any threat comes they look more aggressive and started attacking own infants.
Pig footed bandicoot: The pig footed bandicoot Charo Paseka datas was a small marsupial of the arid and semi-arid plains of Australia the distribution range of the species was later reduced to an inland desert region where it was last recorded in the 1950’s and is now presumed to be extinct this species was previously placed in the family forum leti along with the bilbies as the subfamily cherub hon Tani by McKenna and bell however its form is quite distinct from the pyramidion bilbies and recent molecular evidence supports this distinction.
it is believed to be the sister group of the rest of the per ml morphia and has been assigned to its own family cherub oddity the pig footed bandicoot had a body size of 23 26 centimeters and a 1015 centimeters long tail in form it was almost built be like on first sight having long slender limbs large pointed ears and a long tail on closer examination however it became apparent that the pig-footed.
Bandicoot was very unusual for a marsupial the four feet had to functional toes with hoof like nails rather similar to a pig or deer behind feet had an enlarged fourth toe width a heavy cloth shaped like a tiny horse’s hoof with the other toes being Vesta geol only the fused second and third toes being useful and that not for locomotion but for grooming it had a broad head and along yet slender’s now it’s four whiskers and straight but not spinning in color it varied from grizzled grey through fawn to orange brown but belly and under parts were white with a fur on the ears being of chestnut color.

it was originally described as an Aquinas maculatus and it was retained in the genus and the highness until Mike Archer transferred it to plan again in his 1976 revision of the ladder genus the species scientific name means spotted flat weasel two subspecies are recognized as a marsupial mouse the common plan Ageha lies somewhere between a shrew and mouse and their bodies covered with fur along the tail.
they have different colored like some are white yellowish color, and some have a greenish white color that differentiates from one another. And their body length is approximately 100 mm and tail length is about 80 mm and general male weight is 15 gm and female has weight 11 gm.
The head of the common planigale is very narrow giving it a flattened appearance though less of another plant Gayle’s females have a well-developed pouch that opens toward the rear the gestation time for common planning ale is 19 20 days at the end of that period the female gives birth to five to eleven young the number varies but tends to be consistent with the number of teaching the female possesses they are born at an early stage in development and migrate to the pouch where they suckle until they are fully developed,
young fully emerged from the pouch around 28 days of age begin eating solid food at around 55 and are independent of the mother at 70 breathing begins at around 290 days later than many similar species males continue breeding until at least 24 months of age females are poly estrus and can raise several litters a year in activity breeding takes place year-round.

In favorable condition female is able for reproduction at the age of six months and produce further species.they are carnivores depends upon different preys and rodents. they live in grassland and able to survive in hot, dry, arid and semi arid areas of Australia and they dig a hole and doing rest in
these they do dig approximately 2 meters in depth. bilbies have great strength in the world before 1000 years ago but with the passage of time, their ratio becomes low day by day now only 600-700 species left. Many others are these but most common and important are explained above some are there.
